Beginning today, Pennsylvania schools can apply for funding to encourage walking or biking to their school. The PA Safe Routes to School Resource Center is accepting applications for non-infrastructure grants. This money cannot build physical facilities, but can be used to fund school projects and programs which help get children walking or biking to school.
Examples of such projects include starting a walking school bus, funding assemblies teaching bicycle safety, and buying pedometers so students can track their steps to school. A list of past grant recipients and what projects were funded is also available on the Resource Center website (near the bottom).
The deadline for applications is November 15th, 2011. Information about the grants and the grant application are available online here. Safe Routes Philly is a regional resource and if you are interested in other ways in which your school can become involved in active transportation, please contact one of our Community Representatives.
